I have spent most of my life with animals, and in my spare time, I volunteer for cat charities. It was while fostering hundreds of kittens from newborns up to 3 months that I decided this was my career. Cats make me laugh, and I’m devoted to their welfare. I also know how distressing and disruptive it can be when your pet has a behaviour problem. Feline behaviour, therefore, became my specialist area of further study. I recently achieved a merit accreditation as a Feline Behaviourist, and I continue to study animal behaviour, with the behaviour of the domestic cat being my main interest and recognised area of expertise.
I'm also a proud member of the International Society of Animal Professionals, which means my qualifications are recognised by a professional organisation.
The feline behaviour and training world is constantly evolving; it is exciting and very interesting stuff, and it would be easy to get left behind. I'm still studying and regularly attend seminars, conferences, and workshops led by respected industry professionals from all over the world.
My focus is to address all aspects of a cat's behaviour that can be improved upon to help both cats and humans live more harmoniously together. Cat owner education is the foundation of these in-home cat behaviour consultations. I offer house calls for cat behaviour problems in the London area. Helping you better understand your cats, what they need, and how to best provide for those needs makes for a happier cat and a better-educated cat owner.
So you may ask, what Does a Behaviourist Do?
Through education and experience, a behaviourist is able to observe animal behaviour and try to determine the cause and motivation behind it. Many cat behaviours are common, including those that can be troublesome for cats and their owners, brought on by stress and conflict. Through various methodologies including classical conditioning, retraining, and positive reinforcement, negative behaviours can be changed and, in many cases, eliminated.
Once a determination is made as to why the cat is acting the way he/she is, a treatment plan is developed for you to follow.
I feel strongly that the best results come from rewarding good behaviour. This not only brings positive results throughout the retraining process but also further builds your cat's self-esteem and strengthens the human-animal bond.
How Does It Work?
Consultations begin with an extensive phone review to fully understand the concerns you’re having with your cat. Information is collected that includes age, history of behaviour, and general health background. From there, if need be, an in-home visit will be scheduled that allows me to see your cat in their natural surroundings and assess motivation through body language. This usually takes around 2 hours. It’s difficult to make changes yourself by reading a book or doing online research. I'll not only explain what to do, but I'll also demonstrate in your home with your cat so you can feel comfortable continuing the process after the consultation ends.
A re-training plan will be created that’s unique to your cat’s needs. You’ll receive detailed, clear information that’s easy to follow with a summary report sent to your veterinarian if need be. Ongoing support for questions is always available via text, email, Skype, or phone call.
Booking a Pet Behaviourist early on when problems start to surface is the best way to get any related issues solved.
